Best Gelato Spots in Florence

Florence is considered by many to be the home of gelato, intertwined with the culture of the city since the Renaissance. While you'll find gelaterias dotting almost every corner of the downtown area, enticing you with their colorful arrays of flavors, not all gelato is created equal. Two gelaterias rise above the rest, offering experiences that are not just about tasting gelato but about immersing yourself in a tradition that's as rich as the flavors they serve.

Tucked away on a quaint, unassuming street, a stone's throw from the iconic Duomo and the vibrant Piazza della Signoria, Vivoli is not just a gelateria; it's a landmark in its own right. A mere 10-minute walk from the Duomo or a 5-minute stroll from Piazza della Signoria will lead you to this hidden gem that has been delighting locals and visitors alike since 1930.  The homemade gelato is made on-site daily with nothing but the highest quality, pure ingredients. Try the riso flavor, reminiscent of rice pudding, which was a favorite with our family. Remember to order at the register before heading to the gelato counter.

Perche´ No! (Via dei Tavolini)

Perche´ No! is another excellent family-run gelateria in Florence that’s been in business since 1939. They make their gelato fresh every morning, offering a delightful mix of seasonal favorites and classic flavors. The lavender, stracciatella, and nocciola flavors were our favorites, but in truth, you can't go wrong no matter what you choose. It is located right downtown, nestled along a small side street, just a four minute walk from the Duomo and a three minute walk from Piazza della Signoria.

Next time you visit Florence, put Vivoli and Perche´ No! on the top of your list. Whether you're a gelato aficionado or a curious traveler, these spots promise an unforgettable foray into the heart of Florentine culture—one scoop at a time. Beware of the gelaterias that pile their gelato high, aiming to lure in tourists with their towering displays. Authentic gelato is served flattened in its container and scooped with a paddle, a hallmark of quality and craftsmanship. The kids will probably beg for some, as they come in fun flavors like Unicorno, but skip those and head for the authentic spots away from the hustle and bustle.
